I always thought that after you upgraded to Windows 10, you would no longer be able to use the basic license for the old system except in the 30 days go-back period maybe. I clicked on that since it was really the only option ,and it said that windows couldn't activate. Why can't I activate Windows 10? Or do I have to call again and hopefully someone can get the key authenticated. While the upgrade fixed many of my issues, I have a new one: Windows 10 will not activate on my new setup. Again, it knows the hardware, and a change will be recognized as a new system. On-board Nic died, so we moved the hard drive to a duplicate machine.
As for the technical 'will it work' aspect, yes, it most certainly should. However, I switched a lot. My mom's dell will not activate after a fresh install. We recently had to add more to this number due to our annual re-imaging and I thought that might have been the culprit but as I mentioned earlier in this thread I can activate a new machine no problem. How do i activate Windows 10 if the servers are down and have been down for the last 12 hours? In fact, when prompted for your product key, simply skip it in the Windows 10 setup. I was talking about keeping the license valid, not about your activation issues. And, wait for the activation to take place. Else you should contact Microsoft Support and explain your situation.
