The V50 has been subject to several recalls to solve potential issues with the braking system, accelerator and gearbox. The range was introduced here in Spring 2004 and was quickly fleshed out with larger capacity and diesel powerplants. Unlike the saloon S40 model, no 1. Little of the design flair we usually associate with the Scandinavians has traditionally seemed to translate into their cars. It picks up the basic engineering work from the latest Ford Mondeo — a car which, sadly, is not coming to Australia — but puts a solid Volvo twist into the tale with everything from an in-line five-cylinder engine to its extra safety systems.
Roof bars are included, making it easier to add bike carriers or a roof box for even more luggage. A high priority for this wagon was style, and we think the company has succeeded. The base gas engine for the U. If the front wheels lost traction, however, the multi-plate clutch would engage to provide an even front:rear torque distribution i. The wagon shape is sufficiently rounded off to make it pleasing to the eye as well as to the air passing over it, registering a 0. I must admit I was a little skeptical in the beginning, but I am definitely happy with my choice. Very pleased with the cars performance and reliability.
A lively chassis, reliable engines and a surprising dose of design flair makes it a very attractive buy. The mechanical package is just what you would expect in the class and price, with independent suspension, anti-skid four-wheel disc brakes, alloy wheels, front-wheel-drive and a choice of gearboxes. Others in the same class have much more space. The boot is easily accessible. Original buyers could specify wood, aluminium, plastic or semi-transparent plastic finishes and everybody who gets in will notice the resulting choice. The V50 is definitely a wagon, but it's the first Volvo to look more like a car than a box on wheels.
All too often, we hear about innovations in car design and what we really get is moderately incremental changes. The turbo is nice for passing on the highway. Volvo says if you think of its V70 as a big suitcase, the V50 is a carry-on bag-for fast takeoff and landing. This results in a slightly less involving drive than you find in the Focus. The new body achieved a 34 per cent increased in torsional rigidity.
Comfort - suspension a little hard and doesn't give a good ride over our severe speed bumps. With a range of decent engines, a great chassis and competitive pricing, the V50 - along with its S40 saloon sibling - made small Volvos attractive once more. Like its handling, the V50's accommodation is the same as the S40's. I was lucky to find a great dealer to do service. Residual values are still holding up very well, so don't waste too much time looking for that screaming deal. The handbrake is also in an odd place! The V50 T5 was further equipped with electronic stability control. It is very quick, supremely comfortable and so far has been completely reliable.
However, the V50 was first to get the more powerful D5 diesel unit and you can get the performance T5 version with all-wheel drive. It can be configured to automatically set lighting levels and activate a panic alarm from a distance - useful for scaring away suspicious characters discreetly. There is a vast array of specifications to choose from, and all enjoy electronic climate control, a leather steering wheel, remote central locking and at least 16in alloys as standard. Car safety Volvo's safety credentials are probably the best in the business. However, this system actually lets the driver have significant control.
With the rear seats in people-carrying form, the cargo area is good for hauling 27 cubic feet of whatever burdens you; fold those seats down and the number rises to 63 cubes. Open the doors and you are confronted by an interior that screams modern and minimalistic. As a motorway cruiser it is very quiet and comfortable, returning around 45 mpg when loaded. Then Volvo can offer you the D2 engine, almost as efficient. We had a sneak peek some months back at the V50's new chassis in Mazda 3 guise, so we weren't surprised to find it well balanced. Handling very good - holds the road well and corners very well. Toss this V50 into a four-wheel drift on your favorite off-ramp, and the stability control doesn't activate while you're at play.
The system quickly sends power to the rear wheels when front-wheel slip is detected. The Volvo feels robustly built and promises to provide many years of trouble-free running. Front seats were very comfortable on long trips. It has never achieved less than 48 mpg and on average it has managed 56 mpg and the tax was only £20! The S40 and V50 twins are a major breakthrough for Volvo, helped by some product sharing work with its owners at Ford. Our first set of pads lasted 59000 miles and still had not worn out but were changed as a precaution. Volvo's new is aimed directly at the Audi A4 Avant wagon. I am very happy with the style and performance of the volvo v50 r design.
But versatility rather than capacity is what matters in a sport wagon. So we expected a lot. Mash the throttle, however, and the V50 blasts to 60 in 6. It will easily take a bicycle, the travelling kit for a two-plus-two family, or a big weekend shop.
